Duval County Texas

The Duval County Extension Office is located in Benavides, Texas. This office is responsible for overseeing Duval county which is approximately 1,200,000 acres. The county seat for Duval is San Diego. Other communities include Benavides, Freer, Concepcion, Realitos, Ramirez, San Jose and La Rosita. In this part of Texas, agriculture is the number one resource. The area has an abundance of Whitetail deer, blue and bobwhite quail, javelina, hogs, turkeys, rabbits and white wing dove. The Duval Extension office is a part of District 12 Region, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service based out of Weslaco, Tx. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is currently working on educational programs for the wildlife and livestock producers and introducing new youth programs for 4-H and schools. 

 

Not only does this office cover Agriculture, we are very excited to announce that we now have a health agent. Healthy South Texas is a comprehensive effort by the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas A & M University Health Science Center to reduce preventable diseases and their consequences in South Texas.

 

Working in 27 southernmost counties of our state including Duval County, Healthy South Texas aims to improve both health education and health outcomes. The effort will educate community on healthy food preparation; encourage regular physical activity; and provide resources for preventing diabetes, asthma and infectious disease. We will engage families and work with community partners such as hospitals and clinics.

 

Our overall goal of Healthy South Texas is to improve the health of Duval County residents through agriculture and health education along with physical activity.
